Academic Activities

The department from 2010 has been actively engaged in various academic and research activities including seminars, symposia, field studies, presentation of research papers, publications etc. The department has so far organized Two national seminars (1) India: Post 1990 in collaboration Indian Academy of Social Sciences, on 15-16 August, 2010 (2) Social Movements in Contemporary India: Issues and Concerns, on 5th-6th September, 2011. The proceedings of the social movements’ seminar will be brought out in the form of an edited book. A symposium on Child and Childhood Issues in Developing Countries, (In Collaboration with Federal University, Rio De Janeiro, Barazil) on May 2, 2011. The department also organized a workshop in collaboration with the Department of Psychology on designing curriculum in Rural Health Management Systems in December 2010 involving noted social scientists, health professionals, NGOs and sister institutions of the university. The recent publications of the faculties in the department include edited books (in press) on (1) Village Studies (2) Social Justice and Marginalization. The faculty members of the department also presented articles and research papers on Rural and Agrarian Studies, Social Exclusion and Minority Studies in various national and international seminars. Besides this, a comprehensive reading package for M.A Sociology (Up to Second semester) has been prepared by collecting materials from different libraries and research centers.

Faculty members of the department were involved in teaching Research Methodology course   to M.Com students in the Commerce department of the University. Besides this a faculty member has been regularly teaching the following papers in the department of psychology (1) Indian Society and Culture (2) Social Psychological aspects of Change and Development (3) Ethno methodology: A Field-based Course (4) Qualitative Research Methodology (for Pre-Doctoral programme).

Apart from teaching assignments, faculty members delivered special lectures in refresher courses organized by Lucknow University, Gorakhpur University, (Department of Sociology), Iswar Saran Degree College and University of Allahabad (Dept. of Education).  Faculty has also served as consulting member to the evolution of the MGNREGA Scheme in the state of Uttar Pradesh. A proposal on Child Labour in Hazardous Occupations was prepared which will be carried out in collaboration with the District Magistrate of Rai Bareilly district. The faculties of the department have been extending help to research scholars in other departments and centers like Department of Psychology, Department of Political Science and Rajiv Gandhi Chair for Contemporary Studies.
