About

The Department of Biochemistry was established in 1968, and was one of the few Departments in the country to start a Master’s course in Biochemistry. In view of the growing importance of Biochemistry, both as a basic science as well as a broad based discipline, the Department introduced Biochemistry at the undergraduate level in the year 2000. The Department presently offers a 2-year M. Sc program, a 3-year undergraduate program with Biochemistry as one subject in B. Sc and a Doctoral program. These are highly sought after, and only the best students gain admission. Weekly student seminars and frequent invited lectures by prominent scientists are organized, with a view to develop quality personnel in the field of Biochemistry. The Department organized a 3-day Training Program in ‘Molecular Biology Applications in Herbal Drug Design and Diagnostics’ from March 31 to April 2, 2011 for research scholars and post graduate students. In 2010, the Department held a National Conference on ‘Emerging Trends in Biochemistry’ and a Satellite Symposium of the Academy of Environmental Biology. The lead papers presented in this Conference were published in Cellular Molecular Biology [vol. 57(1), 2011], which is an internationally reputed, peer-reviewed journal published from France.

The Department has a faculty strength of five members. The research interests of the faculty include: molecular biology of HIV-1, anti-HIV-1 drug design, toxicology, micronutrients and their role in oxidative stress, aging research and anti-aging interventions, and natural product based anti-microbials. The faculty is engaged in collaborative research with several institutional and national universities and institutes.

(Book presented by Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and Dr. Shashank Kumar to Prof. A. K. Pandey)

Initiative of Biochemistry Alumni: There is need of “Write in India” like “Make in India”

(Book presented by Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and Dr. Shashank Kumar to Prof. A. K. Pandey)

Dr. Shashank Kumar and Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma, both alumni of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Allahabad, dedicated the book titled "Concepts in Cell Signaling" to Prof. Abhay Kumar Pandey, Head, Department of Biochemistry. Dr. Shashank Kumar said that there is a lack of books related to scientific research written by Indian authors. Research-based books are published more in foreign countries. Only limited numbers of good writers from India contribute to books published abroad. The same books which are written by academicians and scientists of our country and published by foreign publishers have to be purchased by Indian students at very high prices, which are beyond the purchasing capacity of common students. Hence it has become very important that in the field of science, we must get quality books written by good writers of our own country and also published in India. The present book is a small step in this direction, which has been written by a team of young minds working in reputed universities and research institutes of the country. Dr. Shashank emphasized that just like "Made in India", there is a great need to run the “Write of India”. Dr. Kumar is currently Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at the Central University of Punjab. He completed his Graduation, Masters and PhD from the Biochemistry department of University of Allahabad. Both the authors thanked all the Professors of the Department of Biochemistry for their guidance. Head of the Biochemistry Department, Prof. A. K. Pandey appreciated the steps taken by Dr. Shashank Kumar and Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and wished success for their future endeavours.

Prostate Cancer is one of the most common cancer in males affecting about 1% of the population. The incidence of prostate cancer is higher in western countries where people take more non vegetarian diet, red and roasted meat, said Prof. Shukla.

Over the last decade the incidence of prostate cancer is rising in India, rapid urbanization and sedentary lifestyle is attributed to this higher incidence.

Prof. Shukla elaborated upon several research strategies which are currently being explored to treat this type of cancer. Explaining the sequence of events which precede approved drug, Prof. Shukla said that drug development is long drawn process and it takes a long time from laboratory testing to human tests. Almost 90% of experimental drug fail to give results.

April 09, 2016

Head, Department of Biochemistry, AU:

An invited talk by Dr. Devendra Kumar Rai was organized on the topic "RNA binding host protein SAM68 interacts with Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) during virus replication" at 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM was organized by Prof. B. Sharma, HoD, Biochemistry. Foot-and-mouth disease or hoof-and-mouth disease in cattle in an infectious and sometimes fatal viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic and wild bovids. The virus causes a high fever for approximately two to six days, followed by blisters inside the mouth and on the feet that may rupture and cause lameness. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has severe implications for animal farming, since it is highly infectious and can be spread by infected animals through aerosols, through contact with contaminated farming equipment, vehicles, clothing, or feed, and by domestic and wild predators. Its containment demands considerable efforts in vaccination, strict monitoring, trade restrictions, and quarantines, and occasionally the killing of animals. The Susceptible animals include cattle,, water buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, antelope, deer and bison. It has also been known to infect hedgehogs and elephants, llamas and alpacas may develop mild symptoms, but are resistant to disease and do not pass it on to others of the same species. In laboratory experiments, mice, rats, and chickens have been successfully infected by artificial means, but they are not believed to contract the disease under natural conditions. Humans are very rarely infected. The virus responsible for the disease is a picornavirus, the prototypic member of the genus Aphthovirus. Infection occurs when the virus particle is taken into a cell of the host. The cell is then forced to manufacture thousands of copies of the virus, and eventually bursts, releasing the new particles in the blood. The virus is genetically highly variable, which limits the effectiveness of vaccination. Dr. Rai elaborated the detailed biology of FMDV in the cattle's causing disease and development of vaccine to cure the disease. All the students (post graduates and research students) and many faculty members of Biological Sciences (Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology) attended the aforesaid talk and interacted the speaker to quench their curiosity. The Lecture theatre and audio visual system was kindly provided by Prof. Krishna Kumar. A welcome address was rendered by Prof. R. S. Pandey, Dean R & D and vote of thanks was given by Prof. A. K. Pandey.
