About

The Centre of Biotechnology was established in 2000 under Institute of  Inter Disciplinary Studies (IIDS) of Allahabad University, supported by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. At present centre offer’s Masters programme (4 semester) in Biotechnology as well as D. Phil. programme.

For Masters programme students are admitted through all India Combined Entrance Examination conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University every year. For D. Phil. programme University hold combined research entrance test (CRET) exam twice in a year and also provide a scholarship to the successful candidates.

At present centre has strength of 7 faculties. One faculty is on lien and rest six faculties are involved in teaching and research work at the centre. Right now centre is engaged in emerging frontiers of research like cyanobacterial biotechnology, mushroom biotechnology, protein folding, nanotechnology, metagenomics and stem cell biology.

Centre has well equipped laboratory dedicated for Master students and also has specific research laboratories for Cynobacterial research, Mashroom biotechnology, Protein folding and translational research (Stem cells biology, bacterial metagenomics and Nanotechnology).

Centre has its own library well equipped with computers, internet facility and has access to many online journals and books given by UGC to all central universities. Apart from that centre has well-furnished air conditioner class rooms dedicated for teaching to the master students.

प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह को अमेरिका में अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संगोष्ठी में अध्यक्षता किया

 इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के बायोटेक्नोलोजी विभाग के विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह को अमेरिका के मेरीलैंड स्थित बाल्टिमोर में 14-18 अप्रैल 2019 में आयोजित अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संगोष्ठी में वैज्ञानिक सत्र की अध्यक्षता हेतु आमंत्रित किया गया था. इसके अलावा उन्हें संगोष्ठी में शोध पत्र पढने हेतु आमंत्रण मिला था. भारत सरकार के विज्ञान एवं प्रद्योगिकी मंत्रालय के डी. एस. टी. सर्व इस प्रतिष्ठित संगोष्ठी में भाग लेने हेतु अंतर्राष्ट्रीय यात्रा योजना के तहत अमेरिका आने-जाने हेतु हवाई यात्रा हेतु अनुदान स्वीकृत किया. इस अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संगोष्ठी में दुनियां के विभिन्न देशों से करीब 2500 वैज्ञानिक एवं शोधार्थियों ने भाग लिया. प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह एक वैज्ञानिक सत्र की अध्यक्षता किये, एक शोध पत्र पढ़े एवं लेज़र, बायोसेंसर, बायोटेक्नोलोजी एवं नेनोटेक्नोलोजी में शोध कर रहे अग्रगण्य वैज्ञानिकों से मिले एवं अपना शोध कार्य साझा किये. इसके अलावा प्रो. सिंह यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ़ मेरीलैंड बाल्टिमोर काउन्टी एवं अल्फ्रेड यूनिवर्सिटी में शिक्षक एवं छात्र-छात्राओं से मुलाकात किया एवं शैक्षणिक परिचर्चा किया. प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह मशरुम बायोटेक्नोलोजी में शोध करते हैं तथा किसानों को समय-समय पर कुपोषण से निजात पाने वाले एवं सामाजिक आर्थिक स्थिति सुदृढ़ करने हेतु अप्चिष्ट पर मशरुम उगाने की लो कॉस्ट टेक्नोलोजी एवं ट्रेनिंग देते हैं. राष्ट्रपति भवन नई दिल्ली द्वारा 20-21 मार्च 2018 को नवप्रवर्तन एवं उद्यमिता उत्सव में प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह ने देश भर के 10 प्रमुख संस्थानों से चयनित अन्वेषकों से इलाहाबाद विश्वविदालय की टीम का नेतृत्व किया तथा राष्ट्रपति ने इन अन्वेषकों को संबोधित किया.  

Mushroom cultivation training for farmers

 Prof. M.P. Singh, Coordinator of Centre of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics was invited to chair a session and deliver invited talk in the International Conference on “Smart Biomedical and Physiological Sensor Technology XVI” at Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland, USA during 14 - 18 April 2019. DST SERB, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India sanctioned to and fro air fare to Prof. Singh under International Travel Scheme to participate in the Conference. Around 2500 scientists, researchers and teachers all around the world, who are involved in cutting edge research in laser, biosensor, biotechnology and nanotechnology participated in the conference. Prof. M.P. Singh chaired one scientific session also gave invited talk in the conference. Besides, he visited University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and Alfred University, interacted with students and teachers. Prof. M.P. Singh has been working on microbial and mushroom biotechnology for the last three decades and he used to provide training to farmers for mushroom cultivation from time to time to fight malnutrition and strengthen their economic condition. Prof. Singh led the Allahabad University team which was selected in top ten innovators of the country and participated in the Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (FINE) 2018 during 20-21 March 2018 at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The President of India addressed the ten participating team representing different institution.

बायोटेक्नोलॉजी के विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. एम्.पी. सिंह फेलो सम्मान से सम्मानित

बायोटेक्नोलॉजी एवं बायोइन्फ़ोर्मेटिक्स के विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. एम्.पी. सिंह को 3 अक्टूबर 2018 को अवध विश्वद्यालय फैजाबाद एवं अकेडमी ऑफ़ इन्वारोंमेंटल बायोलोजी द्वारा आयोजित राष्ट्रीय संगोष्ठी में प्रतिष्ठित “फेलो” सम्मान से सम्मानित किया गया. यह सम्मान अवध विश्वद्यालय के कुलपति प्रो. मनोज दीक्षित, नाइपर रायबरेली के निदेशक डॉ. फ्लोरा, एवं आई.आई.टी.आर. के निदेशक डॉ. आलोक धवन द्वारा दिया गया. प्रो. एम्.पी. सिंह पिछले तीन दशक से माइक्रोबिअल एवं मशरूम बायोटेक्नोलोजी पर शोध कर रहें हैं तथा 26-वर्षों से ज्यादा समय से विश्वद्यालय में शिक्षण कार्य कर रहें हैं. प्रो. सिंह ‘लो कोस्ट टेक्नोलोजी ट्रान्सफर’, ‘लैब टू लैंड’ एवं ‘स्किल डेवलपमेंट’ bbप्रोग्राम के अंतर्गत किसानों को ट्रेनिंग प्रदान करते हैं. इसके आलावा स्कूलों में बच्चों से संवाद करते हैं, उन्हें बायोटेक्नोलोजी, ‘लैब टू लैंड’ एवं ‘स्किल डेवलपमेंट’ पर व्याख्यान देते हैं. 26 जनवरी 2018 को इलाहाबाद विश्वविदालय द्वारा प्रो. सिंह को उत्कृष्टता सम्मान (अवार्ड ऑफ़ एक्सेलेंस) से सम्मानित किया गया. 17 फरवरी 2018 को बायोवेद रिसर्च इंस्टिट्यूट द्वारा ‘बायोवेद फेलोशीप’ सम्मान, 19 फरवरी 2018 को सोसाइटी ऑफ़ बायोलोजिकल साइंस एवं रूरल डेवलपमेंट द्वारा ‘दिस्टिंगुइश सर्विस अवार्ड’ से सम्मानित किया गया. 20-21 मार्च 2018  को राष्ट्रपति भवन में आयोजित नवपरिवर्तन एवं उद्यमिता उत्सव में प्रो. एम्.पी. सिंह इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय से भाग लेने वाले तीन वैज्ञानिकों का नेतृत्व  करते हुए प्रेजेंटेशन दिए तथा इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय टॉप टेन अन्वेषकों में स्थान पाया, जबकि इसमें देश के 70 प्रतिष्ठित  संस्थाओं ने भाग लिया था.

दिनांक 3-4 अक्टूबर 2018 को आयोजित राष्ट्रीय संगोष्ठी में प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह के 6-शोध छात्रों ने अपना शोध प्रस्तुत किया इसमें कृष्णा कुमार गुप्ता, दिव्या मिश्रा एवं अपराजिता तिवारी ने ओरल प्रेजेंटेशन दिया तथा विवेक चतुर्वेदी, स्वेता मौर्या एवं सुशील कुमार दुबे ने पोस्टर प्रेजेंटेशन दिया. सुशील कुमार दुबे को उत्कृष्ट प्रेजेंटेशन के लिए गोल्ड मैडल देने की घोषणा की गई.

Prof. MP Singh has been conferred with ‘Fellow’ AEB award

Prof. MP Singh, Coordinator, Centre of Biotechnology and Centre of Bioinformatics, has been conferred with prestigious ‘Fellow’ AEB Honour on the 38th Annual Session of the Academy of Environmental Biology and National Conference on Current Issues of Environmental Health, Climate Change and its Management on 3rd October 2018 at RML Avadh University, Faizabad. This award was provided by the Vice-Chancellor, RML Avadh University Prof. Manoj Dikshit, Director, NAIPER, Raibareli Dr. SJS Flora, Director, IITR, Lucknow Prof. Alok Dhawan and Secretary, AEB Dr. Gopal Krishna. Prof. M.P. Singh has been working on Microbial and Mushroom Biotechnology for over three decades and teaching in University to the post-graduate students for over 26 years. He provides training to farmers under ‘Low cost technology transfer’, ‘Lab to land’ and ‘Skill development’ programme. Besides Prof. Singh also goes to school, interact with students and delivers lecture on Biotechnology, its application and prospects. On 26th January 2018 Prof. M.P. Singh received ‘Award of Excellence’ from Allahabad University. He has also received ‘Bioved Fellowship’ Award 2018 from Bioved Research Institute, ‘Distinguish Service Award’ from Society of Biological Science and Rural Development. During March 20-21, 2018 Prof. Singh led 3-members team from Allahabad University and gave presentation in FINE 2018 (Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship) held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. University of Allahabad was selected in top ten among 70-Institutions participated.

During October 3-4, 2018 in the National Conference on Current Issues of Environmental Health, Climate Change and its Management, 6-Research Scholars of Prof. M.P. Singh presented research papers in which Krishna Kumar Gupata, Divya Mishra and Aprajita Tiwari gave oral presentation and Vivek Chaturvedi, Sweta Maurya and Sushil Kumar Dubey gave Poster presentation. Among them Sushil Kumar Dubey was selected for Gold Medal for the best Poster presentation.

Precis on the Celebration of National Science Day, 28Th February, 2021 in the Centre of Biotechnology, University Of Allahabad.

The celebrations began with the opening speech of the Coordinator, Prof. Shanthy Sundaram. She deliberated on the importance of science for science quoting the example of Anthony von Leuvenhock who discovered the 200X magnifying lens thereby opening a whole new universe called Microbiology.

The programme was organised with the faculty and research scholars of the centre and ex-tempore oral presentations were given by the scholars on various topics give below

किसानों के लिए मशरूम उत्पादन प्रशिक्षण

दिनांक 28 जनवरी को इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के बायोटेक्नोलोजी विभाग में विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह द्वारा किसानों के लिए मशरूम उत्पादन प्रशिक्षण हेतु कार्यशाला का आयोजन किया गया. इस कार्यक्रम की अध्यक्षता विश्वविद्यालय के कुलपति प्रो. आर.आर. तिवारी ने किया. विज्ञान संकाय के संकायाध्यक्ष एवं आई.आई.डी.एस. के निदेशक प्रो. शेखर श्रीवास्तव एवं बयोवेद शोध संस्थान के निदेशक डॉ. बी.के. द्विवेदी कार्यक्रम के मुख्य अतिथि थे. कार्यक्रम के शुरुआत में प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह ने कुलपति, अतिथियों, बायोटेक्नोलोजी विभाग के सहयोगी प्रो. शान्तिसुन्दरम, डॉ. अवध बिहारी यादव एवं एवं दूर दराज से आये किसानों का स्वागत किया.

कार्यक्रम अध्यक्षता कर रहे कुलपति प्रो. तिवारी ने ‘लेब तो लैंड’ कार्यक्रम के लिए बायोटेक्नोलोजी विभाग एवं विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह को बधाई दी तथा उन्होंने कहा की इस तरह के कार्यक्रम दर्शाता है कि विश्वविद्यालय शिक्षण, शोध के आलावा आम आदमी से सरोकार रखता है.

रंगीन छायाचित्र के माध्यम से प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह सभी को मशरूम की रंगीन दुनिया में ले गए एवं विस्तार से जानकारी दिए. उन्होंने कहा मशरूम कुकुरमुत्ता, खुम्ब, छत्राकम, छत्रम आदि नामों से जाना जाता है. इसमें प्रोटीन की मात्रा सोयाबीन एवं अंडे के बराबर है तथा विटामिन एवं मिनरल्स प्रचुर मात्रा में पाया जाता है. उन्होंने कहा किसान मशरूम की खेती कर अपनी आमदनी बढ़ाकर आर्थिक स्थिति सुदृढ़ कर सकता है तथा कुपोषण एवं गरीबी से निजात पा सकता है.

प्रो. एम्. पी. सिंह के शोध छात्र एवं छात्राएं विवेक चतुर्वेदी, अपराजिता तिवारी, सुशील दुबे, दिव्या मिश्रा, निधि सिंह, प्रियंका यादवएवं सच्चिदानंद राय ने कार्यक्रम में आये साठ से ज्यादा किसानों को मशरूम उत्पादन का प्रशिक्षण दिया.

On 28th January Mushroom Production Training workshop for farmers was organized in the Centre of Biotechnology by Prof. M.P. Singh, Coordinator, Centre of Biotechnology, University of Allahabad. Prof. R.R. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, presided the programme and Prof. Shekhar Srivastava , Dean, faculty of Sciences and Director, IIDS and Dr. B.K. dwivedi were Guest of honor. In the beginning of the training programme Prof. M.P. Singh welcomed all. This was followed by address of Prof. R.R. Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor who congratulated the organizer for ‘Lab to Land’ programme and said that he hopes that this will be of immense use farmers. Prof. Shekhar Srivastava and Dr. B.K. Dwivedi also addressed the farmers.

Prof. M.P. Singh described the different types of mushroom ranging from edible mushrooms to medicinal and poisonous mushrooms through power point presentation. He said that there are about more than 2000 types of edible mushroom found all over the world of which button and oyster mushroom are most popular. The protein content in mushroom is at par with egg and soya bean hence, mushroom can act as an effective weapon against malnutrition. Mushroom cultivation can increase the income of farmers, provide employment to women and unemployed youth.

The research scholars of Prof. M.P. Singh, Vivek Chaturvedi, Aprajita Tiwari, Sushil Dubey, Priyanka Dubey, Divya Mishra and Nidhi Singh provided ‘hands on training to cultivate mushroom’ to more than two dozen participating farmers.

Prof. M.P. Singh, Coordinator, Centre of Biotechnology and Centre of Bioinformatics participated as Jury member in the 47th Jawahar Lal Nehru National Science, Mathematics and Environment Exhibition 2019-20 organized by Kendriya Vidyalaya, IFFCO, Phulpur during 29th October to 31st October 2019. 319-students from 34 Kendriya Vidyalaya along with 55-teachers participated in the science exhibition. Students from different school came up with innovative working models highlighting the problems faced by the mankind due to indiscriminate application of science and technology and the possible solution of these problems. On this occasion Principal KV IFFCO Phulpur Dr. A.K. Singh, Unit Head Phulpur Mr. Masood Ahmed and many dignitaries were present. They highlighted the problems caused by industrial development, impact of these developments on our environment and need of hour to come out with the practical solution so that development should not be at the cost human health and life.

DBT Sponsored workshop “Hands on techniques used in Biotechnology”

Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India sponsored Workshop “Hands on techniques used in biotechnology” has been organised by the Centre of Biotechnology, University of Allahabad during 17th December 2018 to 1 January 2019. Dr. Awadh Bihari Yadav was Course Director of the workshop. The chief guest of the workshop was Prof. B. D. Singh, Emeritus Professor, BHU Varanasi. The workshop started with the inauguration session in which Chief Guest Prof. B. D. Singh, Dean Science & Director, IIDS Prof. Jagdmba Singh and Coordinator, Centre of Biotechnology, Prof. M. P. Singh addressed the august gathering. The session started with welcome note by the Coordinator Prof. M.P. Singh who also through light on sequence of events on tools and technique from Mendelian era to advent of Genetic Engineering technique followed by PCR revolution and thereafter.  Prof. Jagdamba Singh described the importance of such workshop especially in reference to science teachers where practical is a very crucial. Prof Singh also told participants about importance of such type of training programme which help them to groom their teaching as well as also help to use expertise acquired in this workshop for their research work. Prof. B. D. Singh explained what’s the difference between image and impression. Prof Singh explained to the participant that image can be made by study and impression can be made by performing those theory based experiment in the science. Prof. Shanthy Sundaram, Ex-coordinator Centre of Biotechnology proposed the vote of thank to all the dignitaries and participants. The key idea behind such type of workshop is to train newly & young faculties who are working at University and degree colleges’ level with cutting edged tools and techniques used in the field of biotechnology. In this workshop participant learned different techniques used in the field of biotechnology which include gene cloning, Different immunological techniques, Chromatography techniques and microbial techniques in 2 weeks training programme. The workshop concluded on 1 January after 16 days hands on training of techniques used in the field of biotechnology. The resource persons of this worshop were: Dr. Sohail Akhtar, CDRI, Lucknow, Dr. Jyoti Pandey, BBAU Lucknow, Dr. Dinesh Kumar Yadav and dr. Rajeev Kumar Yadav, Department of Botany, UoA; Dr. Munish Kumar, Department of Biochemistry, Dr. Pramod Katara, Centre of Bioinformatics, Prof. Shanthy Sundaram, Prof. M.P. Singh and Dr. Awadh Bihari Yadav, Centre of Biotechnology, UoA.  In the Valedictory  session Prof. S.I. Rizvi, ex-head of biochemistry commented on important of such type of hands on training to the participant and also told them what’s is different between being a student and teachers.  Also he gave emphasis a training program should be organised how to write a proposal for project funding. Prof Rizvi distributed certificate to the participant. Dr.Munish Kumar, Department of Biochemistry proposed vote of thank. Dr.PramodKatara, Centre of Bioinformatics was also present there.

Prof. M.P. Singh, Coordinator, Centre of Biotechnology & Centre of Bioinformatics, University of Allahabad delivered a Lecture on Mushroom Biotechnology: the rise of fallen in St. Joseph’s College, Allahabad. The special lecture was jointly organized by AMI (Association of Microbiologists of India), Allahabad Chapter and St. Joseph’s College, Allahabad. Prof. Suchit John, Secretary, AMI welcomed Prof. M.P. Singh and introduced him with audience. Prof. M.P. Singh said that wild mushroom had sinister reputation because of handful of poisonous species. Based on ignorance, the common myths and misconceptions about the mushroom i.e. most mushrooms are poisonous, deadly mushrooms are instantly lethal, it is dangerous to touch a poisonous mushroom etc. were dispelled with understanding in mushroom biology and advancement in technology and advent of mushroom biotechnology. Prof. Singh further said that Mushrooms are not only used as an effective weapon against malnutrition but also an important tool for restoration, replenishment and remediation of earth’s overburdened ecosphere. This is an example of low cost, viable, multipurpose technology to meet the growing demand of food, feed, fodder, fertilizer and energy.At the end of lecture the students asked questions on various aspects of Mushroom Biotechnology. A large numberof students and teachers were present in the lecture. At the end on behalf of AMI and St. Joseph’s College, Allahabad, vote of thanks was given to Prof. M.P. Singh.

A ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON “HAND ON FLOW CYTOMETRY” ON 21ST JUNE 2018, AT CENTRE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

A one day workshop on “Hand on Flow Cytometry” was organized on 21st June 2018 by Dr. Awadh Bihari Yadav, Centre of Biotechnology with collaboration with BD Bioscience, India. Dr. Awadh Bihari Yadav welcome participants and gives brief introduction of workshop. Workshop included lecture come hand on flow cytometer season. In starting Dr. Vinay Gupta, Senior Application Scientist of BD Biosciences, India delivered talk on the basic principles and application of flow cytometry.  A 25 participants which includes Faculties & D.Phil. students attend workshop from different department such as Biochemistry, Botany, Bioinformatics, Center Food Technology& Biotechnology. In hand on season 12 participant was given opportunity to hands on with BD AcuriFlow Cytometer. In training season Dr. Guptabeautifully explained different components of flow cytometer equipment bring & software interface to the participant. Dr. Gupta run different samples on BD Acuri flow cytometer & acquire sample for further analysis. He performed differential labelling of blood cells and their analysis, dead & live cell analysis using propidium iodide (PI) labeling of lung cancer cell line and fluorescence labeled PLGA nanoparticles uptake studies in lung cancer cell line.

Prof. MP Singh has been conferred with ‘Award of Excellence’ on Republic Day

Prof. MP Singh, Professor in the Centre of Biotechnology and Coordinator, Centre of Bioinformatics has been conferred with ‘Award of Excellence’ in historic Senate Hall of Allahabad University on Republic Day 26th January 2018. This award was conferred by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rattan Lal Hangloo and Chief Guest of the function Justice Arun Tandon. Besides teaching and research, Prof. MP Singh provides training to farmers under ‘Lab to Land’ and ‘Skill Development’ programme. He gives hands on training of mushroom cultivation and inspires farmers to cultivate mushroom in their house for combating malnutrition and income generation. Some varieties of mushroom can be cultivated easily with nominal cost having nutritionally very rich fruit bodies. Presently, nine students are pursuing research work leading to Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. Singh.

Centre of Biotechnology organised two day educational tour for Master students to Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) Lucknow 2013. Students attended lectures delivered by eminent scientists at annual day of CDRI and visited laboratories of various departments such as Pharmaceutics division, molecular and structural biology (MSB), Parasitology and microbiology sophisticated analytical instrumentation facility (SAIF) which includes flow cytometer, NMR, MALDI-TOF, scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Mr. Manish Kumar Pandey, M.Sc 3rd Semester student of Centre of Biotechnology has been involved in various indisciplianry activities from last six months which involved posting of derogatory and traumatic remarks against our faculty members. In this context faculty members are compelled to send out the media release. This is to bring to your kind attention that he is not a topper of JNU entrance exams as he claims (all India rank 188) in print media. He caught red handed during one of the internal test for that he booked under unfair means. After that he started to post various misleading information regarding department and faculty members in print media and social networking sites.  All the Faculty members of the Centre of Biotechnology condemn and deny all the claims and allegations which he made against our faculty members as well as centre.

Ms. Kritika Dixit, Research scholar of Centre of Biotechnology, under the guidance of Prof. Shanthy Sundaram, University of Allahabad, was one of the six scholars, hppt://www.allduniv.ac.in who was selected for paper presentation from India, at ICMAT, (International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies), Singapore, 2017. 200 papers were selected throughout Asia. She presented the paper titled “Effective Inhibition Of Hydrogenase By Carbon Monoxide To Prevent Oxygen Damage”. The International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies or ICMAT that was held from 18 to 23 June and attracted more than 2.500 delegates from all over world including Australia, Germany, USA, Canada, Africa and other Asian countries.

Scientists from IGIB New Delhi have developed biosensor which can detect heart disease in minutes and predict the possibility of heart attack earlier, previously such early detection of heart ailments was not possible, it used to take long time and many tests to established heart ailments.  A scientist from Maryland University, USA demonstrated that by developing right materials we  can make biosensor which will prevent cancer & other dreaded disease. In most of cases when we detect disease, by that time irreparable loss of cells takes place and it becomes difficult to save the life of ailing person. Prof.M. P. Singh[ Dr. Ashish Kumar Singh and Dr. Vonod Verma of Center of Biotechnology, Allahabad University said by manipulating the gene and changing DNA of living organism, revolutionary changes can be brought and we can increase production and feed starved population, fight disease and develop renewable biofuel. The organizer of the Biokumbh -2016 Prof. M. P. Singh, Dr. Ashish Kumar Singh and Vinod Verma of Center of Biotechnology said the selected papers of this Conference will be published in the prestigious journal Cellular and Molecular Biology and also in a book. Cyanobacterial Biotechnology:

Our group is actively pursuing research in the area of algal studies under various stresses like UV-B, herbicides and organiccompounds.They are being exploited as a source of   biomaterial for bioremediation and biosensors. Its potential value as biofuel is also a major target area.

Mushroom Biotechnology:

Our group is actively pursuing research on various aspects of Mushroom and Microbial Biotechnology. We have improved production and nutritional values of oyster mushroom. Our group are also working on biodegradation and bioremediation of recalcitrant substances, dyes and heavy metals through mycelia of oyster mushroom. Besides these we also are working on “laccase geneexpression".

Protein folding, aggregation and amyloid fibril formation:

Our group are interested in the mechanistic understanding of protein folding and aggregation. Both these phenomenon are linked to each other. On the one side it is important for a protein to fold correctly while the other side it should avoid intermolecular association of misfolded protein to form aggregates. Amyloids are ordered aggregates and rich in beta sheet structure. They associated with several human and animal diseases. We are using a range of biochemical and biophysical methods to monitor conformational changes associated with protein aggregation. The objectives of these studies are to develop small molecules which can inhibit the aggregation phenomenon and used as therapeutic.

Metagenomics:

The metagenomics has emerged as a powerful tool to analyze the microbial communities (cultivable & non cultivable) and its biotechnological potential. The metagenomics is based on the analysis of heterologous DNA (microbial DNA which is extracted directly from the communities in environmental samples). The present laboratory interest is to screen the industrially important new molecules such as alkaline protease, lipase, antibiotics and polyketides from the metagenomes of Antarctic soil.

Stem Cells biotechnology:

Our stem cell research group seeks to generate and navigate bona fide porcine (Sus scrofa) pluripotent stem cell (pPSCs) towards cardiomyocytes. This could open a new avenue of research into degenerative conditions as porcine is a more effective human proxy to work with. This research work is supported by DST funding agency. Moreover, we will try to explore the possibility of generation of bona fide PS cells in other livestock species in particular Bubalusbubalis. This research work is supported by UGC funding agency.

Nanotechnology:

Our group is actively pursuing research in the area of targeted delivery of drug, siRNA/shRNA or therapeutics proteins loaded micro and Nano-carrier to the lungs diseases such as cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, lung inflammation and pulmonary tuberculosis. We are also pursuing research in the area of diabetics by targeted delivery of insulin loadednanoparticles or liposomal formulation to the lung to improve efficacy of existing therapy by decreasing repeated dose using nebulizer.

Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN) Course from January 10th to 19th, 2017 on “Non-coding RNA, Gene Polymorphisms and RNA interference role in Human disease

Department of Biochemistry and Centre of Biotechnology, University of Allahabad, Allahabad are jointly organizing, Global Initiative for Academic Network (GIAN) Course from January 10th to 19th, 2017 on “Non-coding RNA, Gene Polymorphisms and RNA interference role in Human disease”.  Prof. Yong Li from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine USA would be taking lecture in the course. Inauguration of the GIAN course will be held on January 10, 2017 at 10:00 A.M in Auditorium of Nehru Science Centre, AU. Prof. R. L. Hangloo, Vice-Chancellor, University of Allahabad will chair the Inaugural Session. Prof. R. K. Singh (local GIAN coordinator) will discuss the GIAN program and its features. Prof. Yong Li is a Professor in Cancer Biology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, USA. Dr. Li obtained a Ph.D. degree from Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and did his postdoctoral research with a Nobel Laureate Dr. Sidney Altman at Yale University; he started his independent research at University of Louisville. His academic career has focused on the biological and pathological functions of noncoding RNAs, which are RNA molecules that function without being translated into proteins. Supported by several federal grants, he employs molecular cell biology, mouse models and human specimens to define the precise noncoding molecular events that are responsible for cancer initiation, cancer progression, and cancer susceptibility. He has published more than 70 articles, about half of them during the past four years. Dr. Li has served on multiple national and international grant review panels of federal and private funding agencies, including the NIH, NSF, NASA, DOD and American Heart Association, Canada Foundation for Innovation, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Wellcome Trust Fund, and Wellcome Trust Fund-DBT India Alliance. The 2-week GIAN course will consist of participants from throughout India. The course will consist of four modules:

Module 1: Introduction to microRNA and diseases (January 10-13, 8 lectures);

Module 2: (CAR) T-Cell Therapy and its future prospective (January, 14-15, 3 lectures)
 
Module 3: Single Nucleotide Polymorphism, Genotoxicity and Cancer (January, 15-16, 4 lectures)
 
Module 4: RNA Interference role in translational research (January 17-19, 4 lectures)

The course will also consist of lab sessions and experimental demonstrations

BIOKUMBH-2016 (A National Conference on Recent Trends & Advances in Biotechnology)

 

In recent times, significant advances in biotechnology are impacting our lives as never before. Rapidly emerging field of biotechnology has lots to offer us from genetically modified organisms with desired traits to ecofriendly plastic, biofuels to improved drug and their delivery and so on. However, there are still areas that challenge the researchers in the area. Hence a two days National Conference on Recent Trends & Advances in Biotechnology “BIOKUMBH-2016” was organized by Center of Biotechnology, University of Allahabad during February 20-21, 2016. The Conference was inaugurated by our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. R. L. Hangloo and the chief guest of the event was Prof. Raymond Wegmann, France, a legendry scientist of Biological sciences.

Scientists across the globe participated in the two days Conference and discussed the latest developments in the frontier area of biological science. Scientists from IGIB New Delhi have developed biosensor which can detect heart disease in minutes and predict the possibility of heart attack earlier, previously such early detection of heart ailments was not possible, it used to take long time and many tests to established heart ailments.

Scientist from Maryland University, USA demonstrated that by developing right materials we can make biosensor which will prevent cancer & other dreaded disease. In most of cases when we detect disease, by that time irreparable loss of cells takes place and it becomes difficult to save the life of ailing person.

Prof. M. P. Singh, Dr. Ashish Kumar Singh and Dr. Vinod Verma of Center Of Biotechnology, Allahabad University said by manipulating the gene and changing DNA of living organism, revolutionary changes can be brought and we can increase production and feed starved population, fight disease and develop renewable biofuel.

The organizer of the Biokumbh-2016 Convener Prof. M. P. Singh and Organizing Secretaries Dr. Ashish Kumar Singh and Dr. Vinod Verma of Center of Biotechnology said that selected papers of this Conference will be published in the book as well as prestigious International Journal.
