Bioinformatics is a fast developing field projecting synergy between natural and modern biological sciences, between biological sciences and Information Technology.
The Centre of Bioinformatics was inaugurated in 2002. The Centre offers 4-semester (2 years) M.Sc. program in Bioinformatics. Master in Bioinformatics program is quite unique; it is rigorous with its credit-based courses covering latest areas in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Specifically beneficial to the students from both Mathematics and Biological sciences streams, it is aimed at transforming students into trained bioinformaticians with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge for investigating and addressing a number of key biological questions.
The Centre has produced a large number of luminaries who are pursuing doctoral/postdoctoral research and placed at the reputed Universities/Institutions in India and abroad.
The Centre of Bioinformatics provides a Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) with financial support from Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. Supported by grants from DBT and Innovative Programs of University Grants Commission (UGC), the Centre is equipped with modern Bio-Computing and Modern Biological Laboratories.
The Centre also offers Doctoral Program in the areas of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology that includes Biomedical Genomics, Computational Systems Biology, Computer Aided Drug Designing, Evolutionary Bioinformatics, and Pharmacogenomics.
Centre of Bioinformatics organized Essay writing competition on ‘scientific innovation’. This competition was sponsored by DIC, University of Allahabad. The main aim of the competition was to collect innovation ideas from budding scientist and to provide them a further platform to convert their innovative ideas into products/output which will be useful for human and social welfare.

The Centre of Bioinformatics, University of Allahabad, Organized a special lecture on “Probiotics- An overview of beneficial effects on health and nutritional properties” in which large number of students, research scholars and teachers of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology were present. Prof M.P Singh, Coordinator, Centre of Bioinformatics introduced the eminent speaker Prof. D.R. Modi, Head, Department of Biotechnology and Dean, Faculty of Life Science, B.B Ambedkar University, Lucknow. Prof. Modi said that many microorganisms are friends rather than foes. Both harmful and useful bacteria are found in human body. The beneficial bacteria are probiotics and have positive effect on our health. They reach intestine live and prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying in the intestine also helps in digestion and improves vowel movement. Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp. etc. are examples of probiotics. Beneficial microbial population gets altered by use of antibiotics. By introducing friendly microbes in the form of probiotics, resident flora can be improved over a period of time. Milk, soya milk, milk product i.e. butter milk, yoghurt; fermented food i.e. idli, dosa, dokhla, vadas, kadhi etc. contain probiotics and are healthy food. On the other hand, pizza, noodles and fast foods are health hazards. Prof. Modi said that there are two whites on your dinning table- salt and sugar, they are poison or health hazard if used indiscriminately. Hence, they should be used judiciously.Students, scholars and teachers asked questions after the lecture and Prof. Modi answered the queries. At the end Prof. M.P. Singh gave vote of thanks to Prof. Modi
