Institution Ethics Review Board

The Institutional Ethics Review Board (IERB), University of Allahabad (UoA):

The Institutional Ethics Review Board (IERB) of the University of Allahabad was established in March 2013 with the primary responsibility of upholding the ethical integrity of research involving human participants. Its essential role is to ensure a thorough and competent review of all ethical aspects of research proposals, and to approve and oversee studies—spanning biomedical, behavioral, social science, and epidemiological research—to safeguard the dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of all human participants.
The IERB convenes regularly (at least once per semester) to review research proposals submitted by faculty members, research scholars, and postgraduate students from various Departments, Institutes, Centres, and Constituent Colleges of the University. These reviews are conducted to ensure strict adherence to the ethical standards established by the University of Allahabad, based on the guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Declaration of Helsinki (2024) developed by the World Medical Association (WMA). The IERB is also responsible for formulating and periodically updating the University’s ethical guidelines in alignment with the latest revisions issued by the ICMR, WHO, and other internationally recognized ethical frameworks.

“ETHICAL CLEARANCE FROM THE IERB IS MANDATORY FOR ALL RESEARCH INVOLVING HUMAN PARTICIPANTS, AND PRIOR APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED BEFORE INITIATING THE STUDY.”
