The Department started in 1984 as part of the Political Science Department. Till the year 1985, when the Department became independent, a two year Diploma course was being offered. From 1995 onward a one year diploma course was being given. From the year 2000, the course with due changes was updated and a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication was begun. There is an entrance-test with three paper of 100 marks each in language (with an option to choice either English or Hindi), Media-Awareness and General Studies. Admission are done purely on merit.
