The Rajiv Gandhi Chair in Contemporary Studies of University of Allahabad is the outcome of the decision of the Government of India to honour the contributions of the former Prime Minister, Late Sri Rajiv Gandhi, by establishing 10 such chairs in selected central & state universities. The themes of these chairs are: Panchayati Raj System, Women’s Empowerment, Impact of Technology on Society, Eco-systems and Sustainable Development, Livelihood and Food Security, Nuclear Disarmamemt and Peace, Tribal Development, Protection of Child Rights, Social Justice, and Secularism and Nation Building.

 

The purpose of these chairs is to create national centres for academic deliberations and action-oriented research on the frontier areas of contemporary relevance for improving the quality of life management systems. These chairs are directed towards initiating and encouraging thought processes and institutionalizing studies and researches in areas mentioned above.

he thrust areas assigned to the R G Chair of Allahabad University are:

  1. Nuclear Disarmament and Peace
  2. Social Justice
  3. Secularism and Nation Building

The objective of the Chair is to perform following academic functions:

  1. To coordinate and to provide a think tank in the thrust areas assigned to the Chair by drawing expertise and inputs from academics and experts from other sectors like media and NGOs.
  2. To design and execute capacity building programmes for teachers in higher education focused towards the thrust areas of the Chair.
  3. To strengthen the role of universities/ academics in public policy making.
  4. To conduct short-term courses in the concerned disciplines. Publications of proceedings.
  5. To engage studies in research works leading to D. Phil degree.
  6. To set up library for teachers and researchers working in the relevant field.

The Rajiv Gandhi Chair in Contemporary Studies, University of Allahabad, was formally inaugurated on May 15, 2007 by the former Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University, Prof. V. T. Patil with Prof. Rajen Harshe, Vice Chancellor, University of Allahabad, Allahabad.
