Introduction

Centre of Environmental Studies as an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates numerous academic fields (particularly sciences) to study the structure and function of our life-supporting environment and to know causes, effects, and solutions of various environmental issues. Centre of Environmental studies mainly focus on all the elements or factors that build or influence our life-supporting biophysical environment, as well as earth processes, ecological systems, biodiversity, natural resources, alternative energy systems, climate change, numerous sorts of pollutions, and so on. Environmental science integrates information from several other disciplines and so is multidisciplinary in nature. Therefore, center of environmental studies covers biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography, sociology, economics, management, and ethics. Its major subdivisions embrace ecology, geosciences, environmental chemistry, atmospheric science, environmental biology, environmental toxicology, environmental impact assessment, and so on.

Scope of the Subject

Environmental science has an immense scope since it covers a large vary of subjects or problems associated with our advanced life-supporting system. From last two decades, environment science has related to many career opportunities. Major career choices associated with the topic in space of Industries, Consultancy, Research and Development (R&D), Academics, Green marketing, Green media, Green support, NGOs, Government jobs, International agencies.

Relevance

Today, the planet is facing various environmental issues, starting from local issues like ground water depletion to world issues like global climate change. These issues may be resolved only when everybody cares for the environment; for that, everybody must informed about the causes, consequences, and remedial measures of various environmental problems. To realize this goal, Centre of Environmental studies taught it at PG (M.Sc. - Environmental Science) and research level. The subject bears large importance as it aims at saving the integrity of the life-supporting environment of earth that is a unique planet that sustains life.

Need and objective
  1. To know how our developmental and day-to-day activities affect environment.
  2. To create a pollution-free environment (that is, clean air, water, land, and food) by adopting different methods of preventing and controlling pollution.
  3. To utilize our natural resources such as water, forest, minerals, and fossil fuels in an efficient manner, that is, with maximum utility and minimum wastage, by adopting conservation and recycling strategies.
  4. To operate in an eco-friendly mode by adopting clean and efficient technologies and installing pollution control systems.
  5. To solve complex global environmental problems such as climate change, ozone-layer depletion, desertification, and energy crisis by using different interdisciplinary tools and approaches.

Interaction with Ms. Kiranamai Dutt Pandyala, ICE Data Services India Private Limited

Center of Environmental Sciences, Institute of Inter Disciplinary Studies (IIDS), University of Allahabad organized an Industry- Academia meet at DD pant Auditorium, Deaprtment of Botany for the master’s and PhD students. Ms. Kiranamai Dutt Pandyala (Head of Human Resources & site administration India) from “ICE Data Services India Private Limited” on an interactive session with students, provided big opportunities for the youth to work with them. She talked about her company profile, origin of the idea, establishment, progress, achievements and the whole journey of her company from the very beginning to the present day. She also informed about how her company acquired New York Stock Exchange in quite a brief span of time. The company is enlisted in the Fortune 500 and also has collaborations with some of the international companies She also gave an insight about the future aspects of her company which is expanding their businesses in India as well at a rapid pace. The vision of their company is ESG (Environmental Social Governance), which is the need of modern time in global scenario. The three objectives of her company, environment, social and governance, when combined together can prove to be immensely useful in achieving the goal of environmental sustainability that the world is looking for today. It will directly benefit the students of Environmental Sciences to take up new career opportunities and explore new dimensions. She also gave a brief introduction about the work process, work environment and the pros and cons of working with her company. The worth of the selected students will be analyzed after a training period of 6 months in Hyderabad in which they will be trained for Industrial, Social and Governmental issues. After completion of training program students will be given suitable posts in the company based on their performances during the training period. She encouraged the students to think out of the box to pursue their career options in a more challenging way. The program concluded with Dr. Pawan Kumar Jha (Assistant Professor, Center of Environmental Sciences) thanking Ms. Pandayla for providing such a big opportunity to the students with a hope that the students will prove their worth with the upcoming opportunities. Such placements would be fruitful for the students of environmental science as they have a better understanding of the environmental scenario the world is facing today. In wake of such drives the students can now explore new opportunities apart from the traditional approach. Mr. Shashwat (Placement Officer, Placement Cell, University of Allahabad) also assured the students to come up with more such opportunities so that students can have a diversity of career options to pursue. Such placement drives give a boost to the students for exploring wider career options.

M.Sc. - Environmental Science
  1. The Master of Science (M. Sc.) - Environmental Science Programme shall be of the duration of two academic years and spread into four semesters. Course will consist of theory and laboratory practice, and project/dissertation.
  2. Eligibility: A candidate who has passed in bachelor degree examination with science subject from recognized university, and has secure not less than 50% marks on the aggregate, is eligible to apply for the Admission test for the course.
  3. No of Seats: Centre has total 30 seats. Admission Procedure:University of Allahabad conducted PGAT entrance exam in the particular discipline for the admission. Admission will be taken on the basis of merit secured by PGAT.

Note: Rules for award of degree, examination and promotion of students etc will be as per new CBCS Rule 2016.
