The Department of Economics became a truly full-fledged department in 1914, with the appointment of Herbert Stanley Jevons (son of the marginalist, W.S. Jevons) as the first Professor of Economics and Head. A post-graduate course was also introduced the same year, so that the fledgling department offered both, under-graduate and post-graduate courses. Origins are like riddles which may never be completely solved, and the Department of Economics is no exception. However, some sources also point to the year 1908, when the teaching of Economics as a subject commenced at the under-graduate level, though it remained under the Head of the then History Department. In view of the above, 2014 is taken to be its Centenary Year of the Department. Prof. Jevons also founded the Indian Journal of Economics, in the year 1916, the first economics journal ever to be published in India. This is the oldest existing journal of Economics and is regularly published, even today. In an article, published in its first volume in 1916 and available even today in the Department, Prof. Jevons wrote that his academic purpose was “teaching to think and to do, rather than of teaching only to know”.

This legacy of his was faithfully adhered to by stalwarts like Professors C.D.Thompson, A.R.Burnett-Hurst and S. K. Rudra, Mr. B.P. Adarkar, and later by Professors J. K. Mehta, P. C. Jain, S. L. Parmar, Mahesh Chand and many others. Faculty members such as Prof. H.S. Jevons, Prof. C.D. Thompson, Prof. S. K. Rudra and Prof. J. K. Mehta became Presidents of the Indian Economic Association Conferences of 1922, 1934, 1946, and 1968 respectively. Former faculty of the Department who became Presidents were Dr. M. V. Mathur (1967), Prof. Gautam Mathur (1978) and Prof. P. D. Hajela (1980). Only two faculty members chaired a Technical Session of the I.E.A. conference namely Prof. P. D. Hajela (1968) and Prof. Prahlad Kumar (2002). Allahabad had the proud privilege of hosting I.E.A. conferences in the years 1920, 1929 and 1940.

The Department at present has thirty three faculty positions, of which 19 are currently in place, consisting of 10 Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 7 Assistant Professors. It also has a Planning and Development Unit, created through an endowment by the Planning Commission, Government of India, with the renowned development economist, Jean Dreze as the Honorary Chair Professor. The UGC also selected the Department under Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in 2004-05, DRS- I level. It was further renewed in 2009-10, DRS-II level. The Department looks ahead further to convert it into a Centre for Advanced Study. The Department offers a UGC - approved one year employment - oriented Post Graduate Diploma in Foreign Trade Practices and Procedures (DFTPP) since 2002-03. The Departmental library has more than fifteen thousand books and it subscribes 35 national and international journals, along with about 40 journals received under exchange basis through the Indian Journal of Economics. It is in the process of modernization through digital cataloging. The Department also has a Statistical/Computer laboratory for the research scholars. Prof. P. C. Jain and alumni of the Department contributed significantly to the establishment of the Departmental library in the present form.

The Department recently formed an Alumni Association and the first Alumni meet was organized on February 14, 2014, under the Chairmanship of Prof. Jagdish Narayan. The meet was a grand success and it was attended by more than hundred alumni. We plan to hold more meetings of the Association in the years ahead. The Department is presently celebrating its Centenary Year and many academic/cultural programmes are slated for the year. Prof. Prahlad Kumar is currently the Head of the Department.

WEBINAR ON ‘FUTURE OF GLOBALISATION POST COVID ERA’
“A new round of protectionism is feared to be underway in economy post pandemic outbreak caused by corona virus”, said Prof. Sangita Khorana, Bournemouth University, London, while expressing her views in a webinar organised by the ‘Class of 86’ of the Alumni Association of Department of Economics, Allahabad University on May 23, 2020. Addressing the webinar on ‘Future of Globalisation post COVID Era’, Prof. Khorana said China has emerged as centre of industrial production of global value chain in the world for many decades, but the pandemic has disrupted this chain. This pandemic born crisis needs to be converted into an opportunity, said Shri Dipak Kumar, Principle Secretary, Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change,Government of Bihar during the webinar. He stressed on the need of developing Industrial Clusters in states such as Orissa, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where migrant labourers are returning back to their native places in large numbers. Dr. Vineet Srivastava, Director and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India highlighted the extent of decline in the India’s merchandise trade during the recent months due to COVID dislocations. Recovery in economic activity is expected to begin in the second half of the financial year on account of recent measures taken by the Government of India and the Reserve Bank. Shri Shishir Sandipan, Business Head, Alliance Insurance Brokers moderated the discussion. Shri Sudhanshu Tiwari, Joint Commissioner, Industries gave vote of thanks. Prof. Prashant Kumar Ghosh, Head, Department of Economics, in his opening remarks, appreciated the initiative taken by the Alumni Association.
 
  कोरोना के बाद के दौर में वैश्वीकरण का भविष्य  पर आयोजित वेबिनार 
"कोरोना वायरस से उपजी महामारी के बाद विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था में संरक्षणवाद का नया दौर चलने की आशंका है।" ये आशंका लंदन की बोर्नमाउथ यूनिवर्सिटी की प्रोफेसर संगीता खुराना ने आज इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के अर्थशास्त्र विभाग की तरह से आयोजित एक वेबिनार में व्यक्त की। "कोरोना के बाद के दौर में वैश्वीकरण का भविष्य" विषय पर आयोजित इस वेबिनार में प्रोफेसर खुराना ने बताया कि पिछले कई दशकों से चीन दुनिया भर के औद्योगिक उत्पादन की सप्लाई.चेन का बहुत महत्वपूर्ण केंद्र बन कर उभरा था और कोरोना महामारी ने इस वैश्विक सप्लाई.चेन को तहस नहस कर दिया है। उन्होंने बताया कि चीन के निर्माण उद्योग पर दुनिया की निर्भरता इतनी अधिक बढ़ गयी थी कि चीन में लॉकडाउन होते ही दुनिया भर के तमाम उद्योगों के उत्पादों के लिए कच्चे माल या मध्यवर्ती वस्तुओं की आपूर्ति ही बंद हो गयी। ऐसे में दुनिया की तमाम अर्थव्यवस्थाएं अब सप्लाई चेन के लिए चीन पर वो भरोसा नहीं कर पाएंगी जो कोरोना महामारी से पहले था और इसके चलते ही अब दुनिया के तमाम देश अपनी अपनी अर्थव्यवस्थाओं को मंदी से बचाने के लिए द्विपक्षीय व्यापार समझौतों और संरक्षणवाद की ओर लौट सकती हैं।  गौरतलब है कि ये वेबिनारए इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के अर्थशास्त्र विभाग के 1986 बैच के पुरा-छात्रों (एलुमनाई) की पहल पर आयोजित किया गया था। इस वेबिनार के मॉडरेटर भी 1986 बैच के पुरा-छात्र और एलुमनाई एसोसिएशन के एक सदस्य श्री शिशिर संदीपन ने किया। अर्थशास्त्र विभाग की एलुमनाई में 1986 के बैच के विशेष योगदान को विभागाध्यक्ष प्रोफेसर प्रशांत कुमार घोष ने भी अपने उद्घाटन भाषण में सराहा। एलुमनाई एसोसिएशन के अध्यक्ष के तौर पर भी प्रोफेसर घोष ने उम्मीद जताई कि आने वाले समय में विभाग में इस तरह के और भी वेबिनार होते रहेंगे। वेबिनार को बिहार सरकार के वनए पर्यावरण एवं जलवायु परिवर्तन विभग के प्रमुख सचिव दीपक कुमारने भी संबोधित किया। उन्होंने भी अपने प्रेजेंटेशन में महामारी के बाद वैश्विक अर्थव्यवस्था में बहुध्रुवीय व्यापारिक सहयोग की संभावना जताई। श्री कुमार ने देश में महामारी से उपजे प्रवासी मजदूर संकट पर भी सभी का ध्यान खींचा। उन्होंने कहा कि इस संकट को एक अवसर में बदलने की आवश्यकता है। उन्होंने प्रवासी मजदूरों की बहुलता वाले उड़ीसाए बिहार और उत्तर प्रदेश जैसे राज्यों में जिले.जिले में कम से कम एक औद्योगिक संकुल (क्लस्टर) विकसित करने की आवश्यकता पर जोर दिया। एक प्रश्न के जवाब श्री दीपक ने कहा कि अगर इन प्रवासी मजदूरों के लिए जल्द कोई योजना क्रियान्वित नहीं की गयी तो महामारी के तुरंत बाद इन राज्यों में भुखमरी जैसे हालात उत्पन्न हो सकते हैं जिनसे निपटने के लिए अभी से कार्ययोजना बनाना और उन पर अमल करना शुरू कर देना चाहिए। वेबिनार में एक वक्ता के तौर पर डॉ विनीत श्रीवास्तव ने अपने विचार रखते हुए कहा कि निश्चित तौर पर महामारी के चलते साल की पहली तिमाही में निर्यात में भारी गिरावट दर्ज की गयी हैए लेकिन साल की दूसरी छमाही में निर्यात में फिर से गति पकड़ने की उम्मीद है। डॉ विनीत भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक में वरिष्ठ अधिकारी हैं और साथ ही रिजर्व बैंक के डिप्टी गवर्नर के कार्यकारी सहायक भी हैं। एक सवाल का जवाब देते हुए डॉ विनीत ने कहा कि पांच ट्रिलियन अर्थव्यवस्था के लक्ष्य को हासिल करने के मार्ग में हमें निश्चित रूप में महामारी के चलते झटका लगा हैए लेकिन आज समय है इस झटके से उबरने का और उस लक्ष्य को हासिल करने की दिशा में फिर से बढ़ने का और 2025 ना सहीए उसके बाद सहीए भारत इस लक्ष्य को जरूर हासिल जरूर करेगा। इस वेबिनार में लगभग डेढ़ सौ लोगों ने भाग लिया जिसमें अर्थशास्त्र विभाग के छात्रों के अलावा  देश के दूसरे विश्वविद्यालयों के कई नामचीन प्राध्यापक और गणमान्य व्यक्ति भी शामिल हुए।

The Alumni Association was formed in the Centenary Year (2014-15) of the department. The first alumni meet “Anubhav Samagam” was held on February 14, 2014 and second on December 12-14, 2014, and the third one is going to held on February 6-7, 2016.This information is given by Dr. B.B. Tiwari (General Secretary, Alumni Association. The Department of Economics feels proud of its alumni who after giving education and knowledge from this institutions of learning, have achieved glorious heights and laurels in diverse fields, earned great name and reputation in India & abroad and have set land marks in human ideas & civil society at large, said Prof. Prahlad Kumar, Head & Chairman of Alumni Association, While addressing media persons. The occasion will be graced by more than 200 alumnus and their family members ranging across various batches from various parts of the country and outside the country,. The Department of Economics of the University of Allahabad was founded in 1914 under the able leadership of Prof. H.S. Jevons. It is the oldest University’s Department of Economics in the country in the last several decades. The Alumni Association of the Department of Economics, University of Allahabad was formed in the Centenary year (2014) of the Department. The first Alumni Meet “Anubhav Samagam” was held on February 14, 2014, in which over 100 Alumni participated. They shared their memories and experiences in the Department with the current students and faculty. Prof. Sudhakar Panda, former member, Farmer’s Commission, Odisha and an alumnus, was the Guest of Honour.

The Department of Economics feel proud of its alumni who after gaining education and knowledge from this institution of learning, have achieved glorious heights and laurels in diverse fields, earned great name and reputation in India and abroad and have set landmarks in human ideals and civil society at large. Not only at the level of Economics, but also in the realm of human relations, it is a fast changing world where we breathe today. Our Association is making a small but sincere effort to repay or at least, acknowledge its debts to the alma mater and to the society at large.

The Department plans to organize such meet every two years, where our alumni will surely prove the vitality and heritage wherein, once, sat for long hours or they had a sip of tea during those unforgettable days in the Department. In this initial step of the Alumni Association, all of us and the Department shall feel highly obliged by the constructive co-operation, valuable suggestions and befitting contribution of each alumnus.

Rationale:

International trade has been recognized as a tool for higher value addition, generating cost and quality based revealed comparative and competitive advantage in production. Due to the above fact the world is moving towards a free trade regime with free flow of goods, services, investment and capital in a competitive international business environment.

India, too, has recognized the potential of foreign trade to pull the economy to a higher growth path and serve as an engine of growth. India has achieved notable success so far, but our trade share has remained at only 1.6 percent of the world trade. Developing countries in general and India in particular have been placed in an disadvantageous position to expand their exports in the new trade regime where crutches of quota now stand dismantled.

In this context, agribased & small scale industry based products, whose contribution to exports has remained modest, have been identified as growth areas. The traders in these areas however, suffer from ignorance about trade environment, procedures and policies. In order to achieve desired success, there is need to develop specially trained manpower which can handle the trade facilitation procedures, with a potential to develop entrepreneurial vision. This diploma program strives to fulfill the need for developing professional approach and sensitivity to international business environment and provide challenging career opportunities to young aspirants as well as to in-service professionals.

OBJECTIVES

Besides the general training scheme, the diploma program has the following specific objectives:

  1. To develop analytical skills to identify export opportunities.
  2. To enable aspirants to examine conditions which determine the entry and access to potential export markets given the internal and external constraints.
  3. To train the aspirants in logistics of export procedures and international marketing.
  4. To train the students in understanding and dealing with export and import related procedures and documents used by various agencies during trade.
DURATION

One year, of two semesters starting from July till June followed by summer training of 3-4 weeks.

PLACEMENT AND CAREER PROSPECTS

Diploma holders have every bright prospects of placement with institutions and organizations which deal with Foreign Trade and Foreign Exchange such as Trading houses, Export Houses, Banks, General Insurance Companies, Commodity and Service Handling companies and individual exporters. It is an excellent programme providing bright prospects to students of the course to become direct exporters themselves or third party exporters.

SYLLABUS (Subject to revision, if any Download)

The syllabus has been modified from the session (2008-09) on the basis of the feedback from the pass-out students and suggestions from export houses. Resource persons from IIFT, New Delhi and IMS Ghaziabad have also helped in this endeavour. Further changes are in the process.

SELECTION

Eligibility

A student to be eligible for admission to Diploma in Foreign Trade Practices and Procedures must have passed a Bachelor's Degree examination or its equivalent in any discipline from an accredited University in India or abroad (applicants appearing the final year of Graduate Exam in 2014 can apply but must submit proof of passing the examination before admission).

SCHEMES OF ADMISSION

Scheme I: Candidates under this Scheme will be admitted on the basis of an All India Test which will be objective type in nature. The short listed candidates will be assessed through group discussion and interview to judge their merits, communication skills and suitability for the course.

Scheme II: Candidates to be considered under this Scheme must be nominated, Sponsored by registered public or private organizations where they are employed. Such students will be exempted from appearing in the Written Test. They would be admitted on the basis of relative merit to be determined by group discussion and interview.

The total number of seats has been increased to 39 from 32 (as per University PG Admissions Provisions because of OBC reservation) of which 30 are under Scheme I and 9 are under Scheme II and III and Scheme II and III have been merged.

HOW TO APPLY

Online:

Aspirants can download the form from the University website from June 15, 2014 onwards and submit the same on online.

Offline:

The application forms for all schemes must be accompanied by two extra photographs, photocopies of mark sheets from class X onwards and Category Certificate, Sponsorship letter from employer (Scheme II), NRI/NRI sponsored relevant documents (Scheme III)

The duly completed application forms must reach the Admission Coordinator, Department of Economics, University of Allahabad, Allahabad, by July 14, 2014. Postal delays will not be condoned in any case. Incomplete admission forms are liable to be summarily rejected.

ADMISSION PROCESS

All India Written Test : It shall be an objective type test which assesses General Knowledge, Quantitative Analysis, Logical Reasoning, Communication Skills including English Language, and General Awareness. Detailed information about the written test is given under the heading Written Test.

Group Discussion: The sort-listed candidates will be assessed for their communication skills based on group discussion.

Interview: The short-listed candidates will also be assessed on listening and expressive skills, initiative, leadership and handling of unorthodox and stressful situations, etc. through the interview.

Reservations: Seats for candidates will be reserved as per provisions of University of Allahabad Post Graduate Admission ordinance.

SCHEDULE OF FEES

All selected candidates will be required to pay their fees within a week after counseling. Failing which their admission may be cancelled and their seat will be allotted to the next candidate in order of merit. All fees must be paid in one instance. Fees once deposited will not be refunded.

Scheme 1:

The professional fee for Scheme I is Rs. 15,000/- (Rs. Fifteen Thousand only) for the course. The selected person will also be required to further deposit the University fee of Rs. 2350/- (Rs.Two Thousand Three Hundred and Fifty only) and Rs. 5,000/- (Rs. Five Thousand only) as Departmental Fee.

Scheme II:

The professional fee for Scheme II is Rs. 25,000/-. The fee can be paid directly by the sponsoring organization or by the sponsored candidate. Such candidates will also pay the University fee and the Departmental Fee as mentioned under Scheme I.

Note: Boarding and Lodging expenses are not covered in the fees.

FACILITIES

University Central Library

The University has a central library located in the Arts Faculty. It has over 600,000 books and all students of the University are entitled to avail of its facility.

Central Internet Access Facility

he University has a central internet access facility at the J.K. Institute Annexes’ building in the science faculty and all the students of the University can avail of it on payment of a nominal registration fee. The Department also has internet facility of its own.

Department Library

The department also has a well-stocked library, consisting of over 14,000 volumes and over 35 National and International Journals. Efforts are on to introduce state-of-the-art technology by providing an on-line catalogue and CD-ROM facilities. Recent acquisitions have focused on frontier areas of trade and the practical application of trade procedures. The reprographic section of the Department facilitates optimum use of the library.

Statistical Laboratory

The Statistical Laboratory has fourteen computers, LCD projector and OHP's for the students.

WRITTEN TEST: GENERAL INFORMATION

The DFTPP written admission test will consist of the following:

1.English Language
2.General Knowledge & Awareness
3.Quantitative Analysis
4.Logical Reasoning

The reasoning section will have questions to test the ability for inductive and deductive reasoning and problem solving.

The quantitative techniques test may require knowledge of mathematics up to Xth Standard.

The test on General Awareness will cover everything which an average educated person is expected to know about History, Science, Politics, English Language, Culture, Society, Business, Economy and other areas.

The instructions for attempting the questions will be given in the test booklet. There will be no separate time limit for different parts of the Written test. The total duration of the test will be 2 hours. There will be 120 Questions for 120 marks. Group discussion & Interview will be of 40 marks each. There will be no negative marking.

All candidates must report 30 minutes before the commencement of the examination at the center allotted to them.

No candidate will be allowed to appear after the test has commenced.

Candidates are advised to bring two HB pencils and one ball point pen. Calculators will not be allowed into the Examination Hall.

“Twenty-five Years of Economic Reforms in India: The Path Ahead” on March 25-26, 2017

The Department of Economics, University of Allahabad under UGC SAP-III, DRS-III and Planning & Development Unit, NITI Ayoga is organizing a National Seminar on March 25th&26th which will focus on the future economic challenges and to discuss all the relevant issues for Indian economy in the current challenging context so as to direct the policy making in the country towards a philosophical thinking among all the stakeholders in the ongoing sustainable growth process. The National Seminar under its broader theme of “Twenty-Five Years of Economic Reforms in India : The Path Ahead” will comprise of wide ranging sub-themes such as macroeconomic imbalances and policy effectiveness, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emerging challenges of the banking and financial sector, export competitiveness and capacity utilization, changing tax-structure in India, issues for gender empowerment, quantum of population dividend, social exclusion, social security and inclusive growth and launch pad for the next twenty five years. National Seminar on ‘Towards a Green Future’, February 05-06, 2016

The National Seminar on ‘Towards a Green Future’ of Department of Economics started with a Digital Inaugural A two day National Seminar on “Towards a Green Future” began with the inaugural session on Feb 5, 2016 at Senate Hall. The inaugural session of the programme began with lighting of lamp .Then Prof. Prahlad Kumar, the Head of the Department welcomed the guests. Prof. P.K. Ghosh convener of the Seminar discussed the Theme and Sub-themes of the two day National Seminar. Inaugural lecture was delivered by the Director General of TERI, Dr. Ajay Mathur through  Skype .This digital inaugural address is the historic unique achievement of the seminar and in consonance with “Digital India” initiative of Government of India .It is also symbolic step towards reducing carbon footprint .Dr.Ajay Mathur in his lecture stressed the need to use energy efficient technology and appliances to reduce carbon emission. There is need to move towards renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. At the end of lecture he discussed the important features of the COP 21 Paris. The problem with earlier protocols was that many developed nations stepped out of them when they were not able to meet the target. But the significance of this conference is that here each country pledges what it will do and there will be more focus on transparency. He also enumerated the targets India has set for itself. India has promised that at least 40 percent of installed capacity will come from enewable sources. At the last he stressed the need of global cooperation to push technological evolution and make it affordable. Prof. Devesh Kumar Sinha a noted geologist and  Dean, Faculty of Science ,University of Delhi delivered the  keynote address. He discussed about  “Economics of climate change and related global issues: Geological perspective” In his lecture, he spoke about global economy, carbon sequestration, monsoon, agriculture and IPCC (Inter governmental panel on climate change ). He also introduced the audience about various  international environmental  issues  like Carbon trading ,Kyoto protocol and other such global issues. He ended his lecture with the line “If you don’t exist there is no economy”. Prof. Nitai C. Nag, of Dhaka School of Economics, Bangladesh, was the guest of honour.  Prof. Ratan Lal Hangloo, Honorable Vice Chancellor, University of Allahabad presided the inaugural session. He stressed the need to study the environment of an area before applying any technology. He gave the example of Punjab (Bhatinda) were most of the people are suffering from cancer due to excess use of fertilizer and pesticide. In the end Prof. Jagdish Narayan, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, University of Allahabad proposed a vote of thanks. After inaugural session a panel discussion was held. Prof Ravi Srivastava, JNU, New Delhi chaired the session. In this session also Skype was used. Miss Laxmi Narayan, social activist, Pue discussed about the Swach cooperative based in Pune. The SWaCH Cooperative aims to integrate informal waste workers in the Municipal solid waste management system. It is India’s first cooperative which is wholly owned by waste pickers. Miss. Naryana also described the mechanism, features of swach cooperative. The second lecture was delivered by municipal commissioner of Allahabad, Mr. Devendra Pandey. He said that Allahabad is the only city of U.P. to undertake Solid Waste Decomposition. Dr. Madhu Vats, Nauratan of P.M. Modi and director of Hari-Bhari Sanstha motivated the students to take initiative in making their home and surrounding clean. Global Green Activist Sanjay Purusharthi recited a poem on clean environment. In the last session of the first day of national seminar three parallel technical sessions were held on three sub themes. Papers were discussed in the first technical session covering the sub theme environment. Prof. P. K. Chaubey chaired the session and Prof. S.C. Srivastava co-chaired. In the second technical session 21 papers were presented covering the third sub theme Environment and Economy. Chairperson of the session was Prof Nitai C. Nag chair and Prof. M.M. Krishna was co-chair person. Prof. S.N. Mishra Chaired and Prof. A.K. Jain co-chaired the third technical session and about 25 research papers were presented on the fourth sub theme of the seminar Sustainable Development.

Technical Session of National Seminar on Green Energy

The two days national seminar on Towards a Green Future of Department of Economics University of Allahabad held its valedictory in the afternoon organized a two day Nation Seminar on the topic “Towards a Green Future” during 5-6 2016.  In this session on the sub theme ‘Environment and Energy’ three special lectures were delivered by experts.

Prof. Amritesh Srivastava of NPCIL, Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai, spoke on “Nuclear power: an inevitable option for clean and green technology”. While discussing the importance of atomic energy, he insisted on the role of commerce integration programme, media student adoption programme, social media etc. to promote the awareness about nuclear energy . He also discussed the misconceptions prevail in the society regarding the nuclear energy use. He said that India is the third largest electricity producer of the world but 30% of the population does not have access to electricity. He stressed on the use of nuclear energy as a safe and pollution free substitute to the conventional energy sources. In the same sequence Prof. C.M. Nautiyal the scientist- in-charge at the Radiocarbon Laboratory at Lucknow, discussed the natural and anthropogenic causes of climate change. He pointed out the affect of global warming on agriculture of countries around the equator, like Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. He stress that the nations of these continents will suffer with the problem of food crisis in near future due to decline in agriculture production. Mr. Suresh Ailawadi of IIT Kanpur informed that the earthquake predictions are inaccurate and therefore the best possible remedy is to ensure an earthquake-resistant building environment.

The two day National seminar ended on February 6, 2016 with the valedictory session. Prof. Prahlad Kumar, Head, department of economics, welcomed the guests. The guests were presented bouquets and mementos. After the welcome, Prof. M. M. Krishna reads the rapporteur’s report of all the sessions. Prof. P. K. Bhargav, Former Professor Emeritus, Economics, B.H.U., Varanasi and Prof. Shri Prakash, Formerly Dean of Social Sciences, NEHU, Shillong was the guest of honour in the session. Prof. Bhargav talked about multidimensional effect of environment and a need for global agenda with collective endeavor. Prof. Shri Prakash advocates adoption of sustainable development and limits to growth theories for environmental protection. The valedictory address was delivered by Prof. R. L. Bhat of Jammu Central University talked about the complex correlation between environmental degradation and health. He gave the information that high infant mortality rate of developing countries is mainly due to air and water borne deaseases.

Prof. P. K. Sinha, former Vice Chancellor, Dr. R.M.L. University, Faizabad gave the presidential address. He summaries the theme of the seminar and appreciated this initiate taken by the Department of Economics. The valedictory session ended with the vote of thanks proposed by conference convener Prof. P. K. Ghosh.

Budget Symposium in Economics Department, University of Allahabad

            A Symposium on “Union Budget 2015-16 vis-à-vis Growth” was organized jointly by Department of Economics and Bhartiya Arthik Shodh Santhan (BASS), University of Allahabad on March 16, 2015. The key speakers of the symposium were Prof. P. N. Mehrotra, President, BASS, Prof. Pradeep Bhargava, Director, G.B. Pant Institute, Jhusi and renowned Chartered Accountant Shri Shashwat Singhal. Convener of the Symposium Dr. Pradeep Kumar Singh initiated the discussion followed by welcome address by Prof. Prahlad Kumar, Head, Department of Economics, University of Allahabad. Prof. P. N. Mehrotra was of the opinion that budget is neither industrial friendly not supportive of raising saving in the economy. Moreover, he says that it will set an inflationary trend in the economy due to increase in service tax and other inherent provisions of the budget. Shri Shaswat Singhal, Chartered Accountant analyzed the taxation part of the budget and highlighted that how an income tax payer could save taxes. He also emphasized on the exemption of taxes by making donations to charitable institutions (in which yoga activity has beenincluded under charitable institution).According to him reduction of corporate tax from 30% to 25% will not have any impact since its implementation is not clear. Prof. Pradeep Bhargava, Director, G.B. Pant Institute, Jhusi was of the opinion that this budget is going to enhance the speculative activities in the economy rather actual growth and its orientation is towards market. Prof. Jagdish  Narayan, Dean, Faculty of Commerce said that this budget has long run perspective to accelerate growth. Dr. Karimullah thinks that removal of Foreign Institutional Investment and Foreign Direct Investment cap and proposal to enhance investment in infrastructure and social security sector is gong to add to India’s growth. After presentation, open discussion took place in which speakers, faculty members and students actively participated. Some others who attend the symposium were Prof. M. M. Krishna , Mr. Javed Akhtar, Dr. Anup Kumar, Dr. Swati Jain, Ms. Deepshikha Sonker, etc. lastly, the vote of thanks was given by the convener, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Singh.

इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के अर्थशास्त्र विभाग में स्नातक के छात्र/छात्राओं को सम्बोधित करते हुए पूर्व मण्डलायुक्त (इलाहाबाद) श्री बादल चटर्जी ने कहा कि छात्र/छात्राओं को अपना लक्ष्य निर्धारित करके उसके अनुसार ईमानदारी के साथ कठिन परिश्रम करना चाहिए। बिना लक्ष्य तथा ईमानदारी के सफलता संभव नहीं है। उन्होंने सभी छात्र/छात्राओं को हमेशा सत्य एवं ईमानदारी के मार्ग पर चलने का आह्वाहन किया। 100 वर्षों से अधिक पुराने इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के अर्थशास्त्र विभाग में दशकों से अण्डर ग्रेजुएट इकोनामिक एसोसिएशन के द्वारा आयोजित विभिन्न प्रकार की प्रतियोगिताओं का आयोजन इस बार भी किया गया तथा 100 से अधिक छात्र/छात्राओं को पुरस्कृत किया गया। बी॰ए॰ प्रथम वर्ष की छात्रा अल्कमा आजमीन ने सर्वाधिक पुरस्कार प्राप्त किया। विभाग में इसके लिए राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस प्रतियोगिता, क्विज प्रतियोगिता, पेंटिंग प्रतियोगिता, निबंध प्रतियोगिता एव वाद-विवाद प्रतियोगिता का आयोजन किया गया। कार्यक्रम का संचालन संयोजिका प्रो॰ किरण सिंह ने किया। इस कार्यक्रम में विशिष्ट अतिथि प्रो॰ असीम मुखर्जी (डीन वाणिज्य संकाय ) ने अपने सम्बोधन में विभाग में छात्राओं के लिए पिंक टाॅयलेट के लिए कोष मुहैया कराने की घोषणा की। इस अवसर पर विजेताओं ने भी अपने विचार व्यक्त किये। उक्त कार्यक्रम में विभागाध्यक्ष, प्रो॰ प्रशांत कुमार घोष , प्रो॰ मनमोहन कृष्ण,(पूर्व विभागाध्यक्ष), डा॰ अनूप कुमार, डा॰ प्रदीप कुमार सिंह, डा॰ करीमुल्लाह, डा॰ स्वाती जैन, डा॰ धर्मनाथ उराॅव तथा विभाग के अतिथि प्रवक्ता डा॰ दिनेश यादव, डा॰ सरिता यादव, डा॰ प्रशांत कुमार पाण्डेय तथा सभी शोधार्थी एवं  छात्र/छात्राएं उपस्थित थे।

अध्यक्ष, अर्थशास्त्र विभाग, इ0वि0वि0ः
अर्थशास्त्र विभाग में छः महीने से चल रहे प्री पी0 एच0 डी0 कोर्स वर्क का समापन समारोह दिनांक फरवरी 11, 2020 को सम्पन्न हुआ। कार्यक्रम के मुख्य अतिथि प्रो0 ए0 के0 मुखर्जी, अधिष्ठाता वाणिज्य संकाय, अर्थशास्त्र विभाग के विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो0 जी0 सी0 त्रिपाठी, वरिष्ठ आचार्य प्रो0 पी0 के0 घोष ने कार्यक्रम का शुभारम्भ दीप प्रज्वलन के साथ किया। इसके साथ ही विभाग की शोध छात्राओं द्वारा सरस्वती वंदना एवं कुलगीत प्रस्तुत किया गया। कार्यक्रम का संचालन डाॅ0 धर्मनाथ उराॅव ने किया। इसके साथ ही मुख्य अतिथि प्रो0 ए0 के0 मुखर्जी तथा प्रो0 जी0 सी0 त्रिपाठी ने समस्त शोधार्थियों को अपने शोध कार्य को आगे बढ़ाने की बात की तथा साथ ही कोर्स वर्क कमेटी के सदस्यों को कोर्स वर्क की सम्पन्नता की बधाई दी। डाॅ0 अनूप कुमार ने अर्द्ध-वार्षिक प्री पी0 एच0 डी0 कोर्स वर्क की सारगर्भिता का प्रतिवेदन प्रस्तुत किया। उन्होंने बताया कि यह कोर्स वर्क अप्रैल 30,2019 को प्रारम्भ हुआ जो कि यू0 जी0 सी0 के नियमावली पर आधारित चार माड्यूल में विभक्त था, इसकें 1. अर्थशास्त्र में शोधविधि, 2. मात्रात्मक कौशल तथा तकनीकि, 3. कम्प्यूटर कौशल तथा सांख्यकीय साॅफ्टवेयर तथा 4. शोध प्रशिक्षण आदि। इस कोर्स वर्क में अर्थशास्त्र विभाग के शिक्षकों के अलावा देश के अन्य संस्थानों से भी कई विद्वानों ने अपना कहुमूल्य योगदान दिया जिसमें जे0 एन0 यू0 के प्रो0 रवि श्रीवास्तव, जी0 बी0 पंत संस्थान के डाॅ0 कुणाल केसरी, डाॅ0 बी0 के0 सिंह केन्द्रीय पुस्तकाय इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय प्रमुख है। कार्यक्रम का समापन डाॅ0 रेखा गुप्ता के धन्यवाद ज्ञापन के साथ हुआ। कार्यक्रम में प्रदीप कुमार सिंह, डाॅ0 दिनेश यादव, डाॅ0 प्रशान्त कुमार पाण्डेय, डाॅ0 सरिता यादव, श्री तरुण उपाध्याय सहित विभाग के सभी शोध छात्र/छात्राएं उपस्थित रहे।

31 अक्टूबर 2019 को सरदार वल्लभ भाई पटेल के जन्म दिवस के अवसर पर इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय के अर्थशास्त्र विभाग द्वारा राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस मनाया जायेगा। इस अवसर पर अर्थशास्त्र के छात्र-छात्राओं के लिए राष्ट्रीय एकता दिवस से सम्बन्धित एक सामान्य ज्ञान प्रतियोगिता आयोजित की जायेगी। वह प्रतियोगिता अर्थशास्त्र विभाग में अपरान्ह् 1 बजे से 2 बजे तक आयोजित होगी। इस प्रतियोगिता के विजेता छात्र/छात्राओं को पुरस्कार एवं प्रमाण पत्र प्रदान किये जायेंगे।
To commemorate the Birthday of sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the National unity day will be celebrated on 31 October at the Department of Economics, University of Allahabad. On  this occasion a Quiz competition will be organized on the theme of National Unity Day for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of  Economics. The Quiz competition will be held from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. The prizes and certificates will be given to the winners of the competition.
