Seminar / Conference / Workshop / Symposium

August 14, 2015

National Workshop on Understanding Statistics through MS-EXCEL and SPSS (07 - 12 September, 2015)

Organised by: Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science, University of Allahabad, Allahabad
Workshop

Most of the users of statistics, as a decision making tool, feel themselves handicapped in selection of an appropriate statistical tool, understanding the theoretical concept and interpretation of results in a meaningful ways. It is really difficult for a person who is not well versed with research methodology and the core philosophy of statistics. The present workshop aims to expose the participants towards simple and exhaustive ways of data analysis through interactive and practice based sessions along with theoretical learning. Well designed and structured training sessions covering the topics outlined in the programme will be organized. The topics have been so chosen that the issues of research methods and data analysis may be understood by even those participants who do not have any initial background of statistics. This workshop is designed to appeal the different learning styles, with an emphasis on active interactive participation through lab sessions running along with theory sessions. Participants will be provided with sample data set to analyze so that they may gain confidence and expertise in conducting researches in their respective subject domains.

As most participants have access to Microsoft Excel, and it is also a very strong tool in statistical computing and enhancing the practical concept of calculation mechanism. A step-by-step approach to using the various statistical procedures in Excel to analyse data for understanding the statistical topics to be covered in the workshop. We also wanted to make those comprehensive statistical programs more approachable to participants, so we have also included a hands-on guide to SPSS in parallel with the Excel examples. In some cases, SPSS only has the necessary means to perform some statistical procedures; but in most cases, both Excel and SPSS can be used.

If understanding statistics isn't your strongest suit, you are not especially mathematically inclined, or if you are wary of computers, then this is the right workshop for you.

Objective

Against the above background and context, the objectives of the Workshop will be to:

  1. To expose the participants towards simple and exhaustive ways of data analysis through interactive and practice based sessions along with theoretical learning.
  2. To provide a 'hands-on' experience of the models and tools used for conducting research in the different subject domains of Social Science, Humanities and Science subjects.
  3. Participants will be told each step of the way, not only how to use Excel/SPSS, but also why they are doing each step so that they can understand what they are doing, and not merely learn how to use statistical tests by rote.
  4. Statistical theory and formulas are explained in clear language without bogging Participants down in mathematical fine points.
Topics to be covered
  1. The Nature of Data Scales of Measurement
  2. Descriptive Statistics Measures of Central Tendency & Variability
  3. Probability Distribution - Binomial, Poisson and Normal.
  4. Correlation & Regression - Linear, Multiple, Logistic.

(Book presented by Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and Dr. Shashank Kumar to Prof. A. K. Pandey)

Initiative of Biochemistry Alumni: There is need of “Write in India” like “Make in India”

(Book presented by Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and Dr. Shashank Kumar to Prof. A. K. Pandey)

Dr. Shashank Kumar and Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma, both alumni of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Allahabad, dedicated the book titled "Concepts in Cell Signaling" to Prof. Abhay Kumar Pandey, Head, Department of Biochemistry. Dr. Shashank Kumar said that there is a lack of books related to scientific research written by Indian authors. Research-based books are published more in foreign countries. Only limited numbers of good writers from India contribute to books published abroad. The same books which are written by academicians and scientists of our country and published by foreign publishers have to be purchased by Indian students at very high prices, which are beyond the purchasing capacity of common students. Hence it has become very important that in the field of science, we must get quality books written by good writers of our own country and also published in India. The present book is a small step in this direction, which has been written by a team of young minds working in reputed universities and research institutes of the country. Dr. Shashank emphasized that just like "Made in India", there is a great need to run the “Write of India”. Dr. Kumar is currently Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at the Central University of Punjab. He completed his Graduation, Masters and PhD from the Biochemistry department of University of Allahabad. Both the authors thanked all the Professors of the Department of Biochemistry for their guidance. Head of the Biochemistry Department, Prof. A. K. Pandey appreciated the steps taken by Dr. Shashank Kumar and Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma and wished success for their future endeavours.
